The Two Builders

What is your house standing on?

At the very end of his big hillside talk, Jesus told one last story. Two builders, two houses. One dug down to rock; one built on sand. The same storm hit both. Jesus said the rock is hearing his words and doing them.

For grown-ups

About this story: The Two Builders (Matthew 7:24–27)

At the very end of his big hillside talk, Jesus told one last story. Two builders, two houses. One dug down to rock; one built on sand. The same storm hit both. Jesus said the rock is hearing his words and doing them.

About 5 minutes: 3 choices and 2 ways-of-knowing stops. Kids play a builder picking a spot, then try out “hearing and doing” on a playground. The sand house falls with nobody inside. Calm mode softens the storm picture.

Ages 4–8

If your child asks: “Was the sand builder bad?”

Jesus doesn’t call him bad, just foolish: he skipped the slow part. You can say: both builders probably meant well. The difference was whether they did the hard, invisible work before the storm. That’s true for us too.

What the Bible says

Matthew 7:24–27, the closing lines of the Sermon on the Mount; Luke 6:46–49 has it too. Jesus compares everyone who hears his words and does them to a wise man who built on rock, and everyone who hears and doesn’t to a foolish man who built on sand. The same rain, floods and wind hit both; only the sand house falls, “and great was its collapse.” Matthew ends: the crowds were amazed, because he taught with authority. The playground scene in our story is ours, using Matthew 7:12 (“treat others as you want to be treated”) from the same sermon.
