The First Christmas

Why would a King be born in a stable?

The angel Gabriel tells Mary she will have a son named Jesus. Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem, find no room at the inn, and lay the baby in a manger. Angels send shepherds to see him, and wise men follow a star from the east.

For grown-ups

About this story: The First Christmas (Luke 1–2; Matthew 2)

The angel Gabriel tells Mary she will have a son named Jesus. Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem, find no room at the inn, and lay the baby in a manger. Angels send shepherds to see him, and wise men follow a star from the east.

Kids play Mary, a shepherd and one of the wise men, make 6 choices, and stop 3 times to look through different ways of knowing, including which parts of the Christmas scene are in the Bible and which we imagine. Jesus is never pictured: a soft light marks the baby. It ends when the wise men go home another way.

Ages 4–11

If your child asks: “Was Jesus born on December 25?”

The Bible doesn’t give a date. Christians chose December 25 centuries later. What matters in the story is who was born, not which day.

What the Bible says

Luke 1–2 tell it from Mary’s side: an angel’s visit, the trip to Bethlehem, the manger, the shepherds. Matthew 1–2 add Joseph’s dream, the wise men who follow a star, and King Herod’s plan to kill the child, so the family flees to Egypt. The Bible tells the two parts separately; together they make the Christmas story most families know.
