For grown-ups
About this story: The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11–32)
A younger son takes his share of the family money and wastes it far away. Hungry and ashamed, he comes home, and his father runs to meet him and throws a party. The older brother, who stayed and worked, refuses to go in.
Kids play all three characters, make 5 choices, and stop 3 times to look through different ways of knowing, including whether the party was fair. Like Jesus’ story, it ends with the older brother’s choice left open.
Ages 6–12
If your child asks: “Did the dad get mad?”
No, and that’s the surprise of the story. Jesus is describing what God is like when someone comes home.
What the Bible says
The third of the lost-and-found stories in Luke 15. A younger son demands his inheritance early, wastes it, and comes home hoping to be a servant. The father runs to meet him and throws a feast. The older brother refuses to come in, and the father goes out to him too. The story ends there, without saying whether the older brother went in.
