For grown-ups
About this story: Noah’s Ark (Genesis 6–9)
God is grieved by the violence filling the world, but Noah walks with God. God tells him to build an ark for his family and every kind of animal. Noah builds, the rain falls for forty days, and after a long wait and a dove with an olive leaf, they step out into a new world. God promises never again to flood the earth, and sets a rainbow in the clouds.
Kids play Noah, make 5 choices, and stop 3 times to look through different ways of knowing, including which parts of the story are in the Bible and which picture books added. The story stays with the people and animals inside the ark and never shows anyone in the water.
Ages 4–9
If your child asks: “Did everyone else drown?”
The Bible says yes, and it’s the hard part of the story. You can say the story is about God starting over with a family who trusted him, and that the rainbow is God’s promise never to do it again. It’s okay to feel sad about the people outside the ark; the Bible says God was grieved too (Genesis 6:6).
What the Bible says
Genesis 6–9. The world has filled with violence, and God tells Noah to build an ark for his family and the animals. Rain falls for forty days, and the ark floats for months. Noah sends out a raven and a dove; the dove comes back with an olive leaf, and the family steps out onto dry ground. God promises never to flood the earth again and sets the rainbow as the sign. Our story stays inside the ark and never shows anyone in the water.
