The Mustard Seed

Can something tiny grow into something big?

Jesus compares God’s kingdom to a mustard seed, the smallest of seeds, which grows into the largest garden plant, big enough for birds to nest in. We pair it with his story of the seed that grows while the farmer sleeps.

For grown-ups

About this story: The Mustard Seed (Matthew 13:31–32; Mark 4:26–32)

Jesus compares God’s kingdom to a mustard seed, the smallest of seeds, which grows into the largest garden plant, big enough for birds to nest in. We pair it with his story of the seed that grows while the farmer sleeps.

Our shortest story (about 4 minutes), made as a first story for the youngest players: 3 choices and 2 ways-of-knowing stops, including a “grow like a seed” stretch to do together. Kids play the farmer and a little bird.

Ages 4–7

If your child asks: “What is the kingdom of God?”

Wherever God’s way is happening: kindness, forgiveness, people being made whole. Jesus says it starts small and grows on its own.

What the Bible says

Two tiny stories Jesus told, in Matthew 13 and Mark 4. God’s kingdom is like a mustard seed, the smallest seed a farmer plants, that grows into a plant big enough for birds to nest in. In Mark, Jesus adds that the seed grows while the farmer sleeps and he doesn’t know how. It’s one of the shortest things Jesus said and one of the most hopeful.
