For grown-ups
About this story: Joseph, Part 1 (Genesis 37–41)
Joseph is his father’s favorite, and his jealous brothers sell him to traders bound for Egypt. He works as a servant, is wrongly put in prison, and keeps doing good. When he explains Pharaoh’s dreams and gives God the credit, he is put in charge of all Egypt.
Part 1 of 2. Kids play Joseph and his brother Reuben, make 4 choices, and stop 3 times to use different ways of knowing, including how the brothers lied to their father with words that were all technically true. It says only that someone lied about Joseph, leaving out the details of Genesis 39.
Ages 6–12
If your child asks: “Why were his brothers so mean?”
Jealousy. Their father loved Joseph more, and Joseph told them about dreams where they bowed to him. The Bible doesn’t excuse it, and it doesn’t end there.
What the Bible says
Genesis 37–41. Jacob favors Joseph and gives him a special robe; his ten older brothers sell him to traders and tell their father he’s dead. In Egypt Joseph is a slave, then a prisoner on a false charge, and then, by explaining Pharaoh’s dreams about seven good years and seven of famine, second-in-command of the whole country. Part 2 picks up when the famine brings his brothers to Egypt.
