For grown-ups
About this story: Jesus and the Children (Mark 10:13–16)
Families brought their children to Jesus so he could touch them, and his friends told them off. Jesus was upset with his friends and said, “Let the little children come to me.” Then he took the children in his arms and blessed them.
A short story (about 4 minutes) for the youngest players: 2 choices and 2 ways-of-knowing stops. Kids play one of Jesus’ friends and then a child in the crowd. Jesus is shown as a soft light, never as a person.
Ages 4–7
If your child asks: “Why did Jesus’ friends say no?”
The Bible doesn’t say. Most likely they thought they were protecting Jesus’ time. The point of the story is that Jesus didn’t want protecting from children. You can say: grown-ups get it wrong sometimes, and Jesus set them straight.
What the Bible says
Mark 10:13–16, also in Matthew 19 and Luke 18. People bring their children to Jesus to be touched and blessed; the disciples rebuke them. Jesus is indignant and says, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” He adds that whoever doesn’t receive the kingdom like a little child will never enter it, then takes the children in his arms and blesses them.
