About this story: The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37)
A teacher of God’s law asks Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus answers with a story about a man robbed on the road to Jericho. A priest and a temple helper walk past. A Samaritan, someone the listeners didn’t expect much from, stops and helps.
Kids play the priest and the Samaritan, make 4 choices, and stop 4 times to use different ways of knowing to see why people walk past and what “neighbor” really means.
Ages 5–11
If your child asks: “Why didn’t the priest help?”
The story doesn’t say. Jesus leaves it open so we ask ourselves the same question: what stops us from stopping?
What the Bible says
A story Jesus told in Luke 10, when a lawyer asked, “Who is my neighbor?” A man is robbed and left on the road. A priest and a Levite (a temple helper) walk past. A Samaritan, from a people Jesus’ listeners looked down on, stops, bandages him and pays for his care. Jesus ends by asking which one was a neighbor, and says, “Go and do likewise.”
